The Holy Spirit : Activating God’s Power in Your Life

Author: Billy Graham
Reviewed by: Ojile Emmanuel

Little did I know that Billy Graham was not only the great evangelist I grew up admiring, but also an amazing author. The Holy Spirit is, in my view, a best-seller because of the clarity with which he breaks down the concepts and doctrine surrounding the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit.

The book elaborately explains the ministry of God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. Before reading, I already believed and accepted this truth, but Graham expanded my understanding of why I believe in His deity.

He also tackles difficult but important questions such as:

  • What is the blasphemous sin against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven?
  • What is the difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the infilling of the Spirit?

One key insight from the book is the progression of God’s manifestation:

  • In the Old Testament, God the Father was revealed as God for us.
  • In the New Testament, Jesus Christ was revealed as God with us.
  • And today, through the Holy Spirit, we experience God in us.

Reading this book once won’t be enough. I’ve archived it and plan to revisit it again to fully grasp its message — and I’m certain you will feel the same.

Key Lessons
  1. The Holy Spirit is God
The first revelation anyone must grasp is that the Holy Spirit is not a phenomenon, a feeling, or an impersonal force but the third Person of the Trinity, present from the very beginning with God the Father and the Son.
  2. He Reveals Christ to Us
The Holy Spirit has His own will, yet He never acts independently. His work is to reveal and represent the heart of the Father through Christ Jesus (John 16:13 KJV).
  3. The Holy Spirit Reveals the Will of God
Just as your own spirit knows your thoughts, so the Spirit of God alone knows the heart and will of the Father. You cannot know God’s will without the revelation of the Holy Spirit.
  4. The Holy Spirit is Our Helper
Living a righteous life is impossible in human strength. The Holy Spirit enables us to manifest the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) and empowers us to walk in obedience to God.
  5. The Sin of Blasphemy is Committed by Unbelievers
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the rejection of His witness that Jesus Christ is Lord. Believers cannot commit this sin because it is only possible for those who persistently reject Christ — as the Pharisees once did (Acts 7:51).

Scripture Nugget

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
— John 14:26 (KJV)

Final Thoughts

If you have doubts or confusion about the Triune God, this book will be an eye-opener. Graham does a comprehensive job of shedding light on the diverse workings of the Holy Spirit — in the world, in the church, and in our personal lives as believers.
